children's ministries

Our vision is to make young disciples who know God, share God, and serve God. We strive to accomplish this through a living partnership between the ministry of the church and the ministry of the home.

We believe spiritual growth needs to continue beyond Sunday morning so we intentionally develop programs that encourage learning, sharing, and serving for both our children and their families. As a result, spiritual growth can happen through conversations and reflection both at church and home...children and adults together.

Please contact Kim Snarr, Director of Children's Ministries, at or ph#309-685-5258, ext. 20, for more information about any of our children's programs.

Kids' Kingdom Sunday School

Families begin in worship together at 10:00 a.m. each Sunday morning. After the children come forward for Time with the Growing Church children's message, they are led by shepherds to Chapel Time and Sunday School that takes place during the remainder of the worship service. Children remain in worship during special worship services throughout the year.

Sunday School, with its life-lasting importance, is a high priority at First Federated Church. Our Sunday School program enhances learning by letting children actively experience the Bible and its lessons for life, engaging children through a fun and stimulating program, developing children's faith by helping them find their place in God's story, and creating a welcoming atmosphere where all church members can share their gifts and talents. Additionally, we provide opportunities for children and families to learn together so spiritual growth continues beyond Sunday morning.

Our children in kindergarten through sixth grade are taught through the multi-dimensional, Workshop Rotation ModelTM of learning. Students rotate by groups into a different room each week, studying one scripture story over a four-week period. Through different real-life experiences, children learn more and have a great time. Our four learning centers are as follows:

Creation Station. This art and science room gives children the opportunity to express what they are learning through artwork or experiments. Activities here might include making paper, banners, candles, or Joseph's "coat of many colors."

Starbright Theatre. The large movie screen and popcorn machine create a theater-like atmosphere where children can watch a movie depicting the lesson being studied. Children have even made their own videos and watched themselves be Bible stars.

The Upper Room. Imagine cinnamon roll crosses, Noah's Ark pita pockets filled with animal crackers, and an Empty Tomb muffin for Easter morning breakfast. Children love to turn Bible lessons into edible experiences.

www.kingdom.com(e). Kids love computers, so traditional Bible content is taught here through interactive multimedia. Imagination is unleashed as children read Bible verses and stories and then play related computer games, or as they share Jesus' journey as a "virtual disciple."

Nursery

Our nursery is always available for younger children (0 to 3 years) during the entire Sunday worship time and most special events. It is staffed by a caring, regular staff person with additional assistance from high school students and parents. Children enjoy music, simple lessons, and plenty of free play in a DCFS-certified environment.

Preschool Palace

Preschoolers begin in worship in the sanctuary with their families each Sunday morning. After the children's message, preschoolers are led by a shepherd to Chapel Time and then to their own "Preschool Palace" room. Because these children are learning to feel comfortable at church, they stay in the same familiar room each week with a regular preschool team of teachers and shepherds. This helps them learn about God's love while gaining familiarity with their church environment.

Other Children's Special Events

Children and adults together have the opportunity to participate in regular and special worship services periodically throughout the year. Besides being encouraged to acolyte, usher, and sing, children also have roles in many special services such as Pretiola Prayer Sunday, Youth Sunday, World Communion Sunday, Christmas Pageant, and Epiphany Celebration. Children remain in worship for these events and for all holiday services.

We also have many intergenerational events that celebrate special milestones such as First Step Sunday school orientation, Backpack Blessing Sunday, Bible Dedication Sunday, and Sacraments Workshop. Vacation Bible School

Each summer in July, children participate in a fun-filled week of Bible learning, recreation, and hands-on activities during Vacation Bible School. Children ages three through completed fifth grade are invited to attend and invite their friends, neighbors and classmates.
